The Best CPHQ Study Materials in 2026, Compared

I have taught this exam to more than 3,400 people, and the candidates who buy the most material are not the ones who pass most comfortably. The exam is 140 questions in a maximum of three hours, 125 of them scored and 15 unscored pretest items, and it is weighted 23% recall, 57% application and 20% analysis. That weighting is the whole argument. Reading trains recall. Only questions train application, and only timed questions train application under a clock.

HQ Solutions is NAHQ's own reference text and it is the most authoritative source on this list. It is also a reference book, not a revision guide, and treating it as one is where a lot of study time goes to die. Reading it end to end takes weeks and leaves you with recognition rather than recall, which is the wrong currency for an exam that is only 23% recall.

Use it as a lookup. Sit questions first, and when you get one wrong, read the two or three pages that explain the concept behind it. You will end up having read perhaps half the book, in the order your own errors dictated, which is a better order than the table of contents. Keep it afterwards, because it stays useful in the job long after the exam.

Is it enough on its own? For someone with several years in a quality department who already runs improvement cycles and reads control charts, sometimes. For everyone else, no, and not because it lacks content but because it does not make you practise.

What I would say about them honestly: the review course has the strongest claim to blueprint alignment on this page, because the organisation selling it also writes the exam. The Prep Practice Test is worth having for item style even though 140 questions is not a question bank. The Virtual Class suits people who need a fixed date in the diary more than they need flexibility, which is a real and common need. The bundles are convenient rather than cheap, and the Prep-to-Exam Bundle is worth doing the arithmetic on: it wraps the exam fee in, and the exam fee is $799 for international non-members and $714 for US non-members, so compare the bundle against buying the pieces you would actually use.

The honest weakness across the set is practice volume. None of it gives you the thousand-question grind that turns blueprint knowledge into exam performance.

Mometrix produces a commercial study guide and flashcards for this exam among many others. They are inexpensive and readable, and for a candidate coming into healthcare quality from a clinical post with no background in the vocabulary, a cheap readable first pass has real value.

Where they mislead is level. Third-party guides and free sample tests skew heavily towards recall, because recall items are easy to write. Score well on them and you can walk into a 57%-application exam badly calibrated. If you are getting most questions right on a free test, that tells you about the free test rather than about you. Live cohorts run across Egypt and the Gulf, some excellent and some not. What they sell, genuinely, is accountability. A fixed session with other people in it defeats procrastination in a way no self-paced library can, and regional cohorts also give you examples drawn from the accreditation regimes you actually work under, which makes abstract material concrete.

The trade-offs are real: you study on the cohort's timetable rather than yours, quality depends entirely on the individual instructor, and prices vary far more than the content does. Two questions before paying: who is teaching it, with what practical background, and how many practice questions does it include. If the answer to the second is fewer than several hundred, you are buying teaching and will still need to buy practice.

The category's strength is fit. Recorded lessons can be watched between shifts, paused, and repeated, and a large integrated question bank keeps knowledge and practice in one place instead of two purchases. Cost per study hour is usually the lowest of any paid option. The category's weakness is that nothing makes you turn up. Self-paced study without a written schedule is where most abandoned preparations happen, which is why I would rather someone bought a cheap course and followed a plan than an expensive one and drifted. Judge any course in this category, including mine, on four things: whether the question explanations reason through every option or just name the answer; whether there is a full-length timed mock; whether the domain coverage matches the blueprint weights rather than the instructor's favourite topics; and whether the person teaching has run improvement work rather than only taught it.

Skip anything that promises the real questions. Sites selling CPHQ dumps fail candidates for four separate reasons, and only the first is about ethics.

Also skip: buying a second textbook before finishing the first, note-making that reproduces the source rather than compressing it, and any course that cannot tell you how many practice questions it includes.
