CPHQ questions, answered
What is CPHQ certification?
CPHQ stands for Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality — the internationally recognised credential for healthcare quality professionals. It signals that you can design measures, lead improvement, manage risk and interpret accreditation standards, and in many hospitals it is now the entry requirement for a quality role.
Who can take the CPHQ exam?
The exam is open to healthcare professionals working in or moving into quality — doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, quality coordinators and managers. Eligibility is set by the Healthcare Quality Certification Commission (HQCC), which administers the exam; check the current requirements with them before you apply.
How many questions are on the CPHQ exam?
140 questions in total: 125 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest items being trialled for future exams. You cannot tell which is which while sitting it, so every question is worth answering properly.
How long is the CPHQ exam?
Three hours. That works out at roughly 77 seconds per question, which is why practising under time matters as much as knowing the material.
What are the CPHQ exam domains?
Seven content areas: Performance & Process Improvement, Health Data Analytics, Quality Leadership & Integration, Patient Safety, Quality Review & Accountability, Population Health & Care Transitions, and Regulatory & Accreditation. They are not weighted equally — the first two carry over 40% of the scored content between them.
What score do I need to pass the CPHQ exam?
A scaled score of 600. A scaled score is not a percentage or a raw question count — it adjusts for small differences in difficulty between exam forms, so 600 means the same standard whichever version you sit.
Is CPHQ worth it?
If you work in healthcare quality, or want to, it is the credential most employers recognise — and in a growing number of hospitals it is the one that gets a CV past the first filter. It is also a structured way to learn the discipline properly rather than picking it up piecemeal on the job.
How long should I study for the CPHQ exam?
Most candidates give it eight to twelve weeks at a few hours a week, though it depends heavily on how much quality work you already do. Because access here does not expire, you can go slower without losing anything.
